Did Windows 10 automatically update itself on this user's PC with curiously perfect timing — or was this mid-shower surprise just an honest mistake?

A user reports that Windows pushed an update onto their PC without consent, and immediately questions Microsoft's IQ.

Last year, Microsoft declared Windows 10 officially "End of Life," which understandably caused a stir among many users. Some even called it programmed obsolescence. 🙄

Microsoft has been really pushing for us to upgrade to Windows 11 since it launched back in 2021. They've even put up those full-screen, in-your-face ads! But hey, some folks just aren't ready to leave Windows 10. Reasons? Could be the tricky hardware requirements, or maybe they just don't like the new look of Windows 11. 🤷‍♂️

And then there's this story... a user claims their PC just decided to upgrade to Windows 11 all by itself, without them even knowing! They say they kept getting prompts to upgrade, and even saw "install update" options right next to the shutdown button. But they *insisted* they never agreed to it. 🤨

The weirdest part? They stepped out for a shower, and when they came back, BAM! Windows 11 was already installing. Talk about perfect timing, or maybe just a really inconvenient coincidence? 🤷‍♀️

"Windows 10 automatically started installing the Windows 11 update while I was taking a shower."
        — djseifer on Reddit

This user, apparently named 'djseifer' on Reddit, is NOT happy about the forced upgrade, especially with the new Start menu and taskbar being all center-aligned. He vented, *"I'd been getting messages to upgrade to Windows 11... and each time, I decline. It's gotten to the point that I get random, frequent pop\_ups asking to update... Well, I made the mistake of going to take a shower with my PC on. Half an hour later, I come back to this. ... Now I'm sitting here staring at the Start button and all the open programs center-justified on the taskbar and wondering what idiot thought that was a good idea."*

Windows 10 is still popular among a group of holdouts.

So, can Microsoft just force-upgrade your PC without you agreeing? It seems unlikely they'd bypass all the prompts and consents. Maybe the user accidentally clicked something they didn't mean to? 🤔

If you're on Windows 10 and want to stay there, here are a few tricks:

Disable automatic Windows updates. This gives you more control, but remember, it also means missing out on important security patches! Trade-offs, people! 😬
You can try to mess with TPM settings. If your PC doesn't have TPM 2.0 enabled (which Microsoft calls a "non-negotiable" requirement for Windows 11), it *might* make upgrading impossible.

Even after Windows 10's official support ended on October 14, 2025, you can still use it, especially if you're part of the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. But honestly, it's like hitting a snooze button on a system that's already on its last legs. 😴

What do you think happened here? Was it a sneaky Microsoft move, or just a user error? Let us know in the comments! 👇
