Pragmata (PC, Xbox) Reviewed: A New Contender in the Space Adventure Genre

Hey everyone! I recently had the chance to dive into Pragmata on PC, and I’ve got some thoughts to share with you all. This game promised a unique blend of space exploration, AI companionship, and intense combat, and let me tell you, it delivered in spades! 🚀

Right from the get-go, Pragmata pulls you into a gripping narrative. You play as Hugh, a survivor stranded on a derelict moon base with a rogue AI, IDUS, actively trying to eliminate him. Things take a turn when an android named Diana saves Hugh. She's not just a tool; she's a genuinely endearing character, learning about the world through "REM" sessions that feel like Hugh sharing his memories of Earth with her. 💖

Diana is the complete package of cute and ability.

The game truly shines when it focuses on the bond between Hugh and Diana. Her childlike curiosity and Hugh's protective nature create some heartwarming moments. It’s a strong contrast to Hugh’s own dire situation. The game really taps into timely themes of AI and humanity's expansion into space, making it feel incredibly relevant. 🌍🤖

While the story takes some dramatic turns, there were moments where Hugh’s personal struggles felt a bit overshadowed by the focus on Diana's development. Still, her growth is a central pillar of the game, and it’s a joy to watch her evolve.

Combat: Hacking Your Way to Victory

Now, let's talk about the gameplay, specifically the combat. Pragmata doesn't just give you a gun and tell you to shoot. It integrates a hacking mechanic that’s actually core to the experience. Forget mindless shooting; here, you need to strategically hack your enemies to make them vulnerable before you can deal significant damage.

Can you not look so adorable while hacking in this sci-fi action game?

This hacking system feels fresh and innovative. You're presented with an interface where you need to complete specific tasks to open up enemies for damage. It adds a layer of strategy that really shakes up the shooter genre.

I wonder where I should shoot him.

It’s not always perfect, though. When you're facing large groups of enemies, the combat can get a little chaotic, and managing both the hacking and dodging enemy attacks can be pretty intense. Sometimes it feels like the game throws too much at you at once, leading to unavoidable damage. But overall, I love the challenge it brings! The variety of hacking abilities you can unlock for Diana adds a great deal of depth.

BOOM HEADSHOT!

Weapons are varied and satisfying, from shotguns to railguns. You’ll also find plenty of opportunities to upgrade them back at your base, "The Shelter." This base also serves as a safe haven where you can heal and get new abilities that offer small but impactful buffs.

The Shelter Camp bot is as cute as he is helpful.

The game takes you through distinct areas, from cityscapes reminiscent of New York to unique, printed Lunafilament forests. Each environment feels visually stunning and contributes to the overall atmosphere.

Performance: Looks Good, Plays Smooth

I played Pragmata on PC with a powerful setup (RTX 5080, 9800X3D, 64GB RAM) and was blown away. At 4K resolution with max settings and DLSS Quality, I was hitting over 120 FPS with frame generation, even with Path Tracing enabled! The visuals are absolutely gorgeous. ✨

There were a few minor stutters during loading screens or transitioning between scenes, especially when interacting with characters at The Shelter. Disabling Path Tracing seemed to fix this for me, suggesting it might be a minor hiccup with that specific setting.

On the Xbox Series X, the experience was equally solid. It runs at a smooth 60 FPS in performance mode without any crashes. You might sacrifice a bit of visual flair compared to PC, but it remains a fantastic experience.

Verdict: Should You Buy It?

Absolutely! Pragmata is a moving and engaging experience that truly captures what it means to be human, even in the cold expanse of space. The relationship between Hugh and Diana is the heart of the game, and the unique, challenging combat makes it stand out from the crowd.

Pragmata even recreates the Earth Rise photo!

It reminds me of classics like Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and Dead Space in how it blends narrative and gameplay so effectively. The linear structure ensures it never feels like a chore, making every collectible and area investigation feel rewarding. This is another win for Capcom, proving they're still capable of delivering exceptional experiences.

Pros:

  • Engaging and innovative combat mechanics.
  • A heartfelt story that explores humanity and AI.
  • Beautiful and distinct environments.
  • Excellent performance on PC and Xbox.

Cons:

  • Combat can sometimes become chaotic.
  • Narrative focus occasionally shifts away from Hugh's personal plight.

Pragmata is a stellar achievement in storytelling and gameplay innovation. It elegantly blends a touching narrative of human-AI connection with a uniquely challenging combat system, making it a must-play for fans of atmospheric sci-fi adventures.
